When you hear 'survival horror', Resident Evil and Silent Hill spring to mind immediately. Most horror game franchises last a single game, or maybe two (Siren and Condemned), but only Fatal Frame comes close to the staying power that the 'big two' of survival horror, with five games across various platforms under its belt.
Fatal Frame is the product of folklore, urban myths and the Japanese fascination with spirit photography. Spirit photography, the practice of capturing spectral images on film, plays a major role in Fatal Frame's gameplay, as the protagonists of the series have only the “Camera Obscura” (a magical camera that traps ghosts within the film, not an actual camera obscura, which is way too big to be lugged around by a frightened schoolgirl and doesn't even have film).
Although the games in the series are not direct sequels to one another, they are closely connected. Allusions to the fictional occultist Kunihiko Aso, designer of the games' magic cameras, and deep familial connections between the cast of the games become clear as the series progresses.
Although the first title in the series, the eponymous Fatal Frame, has been out of print for years and is in high demand – especially the Xbox version of the game with additional features – but Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly and Fatal Frame III: The Tormented are a bit easier to find. Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was released in Japan this summer for the Wii, but unfortunately will not be making its way to the US.
Right now, GameQuestDirect.com is offering the second and third games in the series for a limited time, including the tough-to-find “Director's Cut” of Crimson Butterfly exclusive to the Xbox.
